Humberto has reinforced from a hurricane to be a Category 1 typhoon — the first of the 2013 Atlantic season — the National Hurricane Center said early Wednesday.
Humberto's most extreme managed winds were close to 75 mph, just above the 74 mph level that elevates it to a typhoon from a hurricane.

Humberto is presently focused something like 310 miles west-northwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, in the eastern Atlantic, and is moving north-northwest close to 8 mph.
Independently, Tropical Storm Gabrielle passed west-southwest of Bermuda, hitting the rich British domain with wind, drizzle and harsh surf.
