Women of NASA Lego set will be available on November 1st

We heard back in March that Lego would make a “Women of NASA” set, which was submitted to the Lego Ideas competition and now, the set is finally ready. And guess what?It looks pretty awesome.It will be released on November 1st for $25.

The set celebrates the women of NASA and contains four different figures: Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and Mae Jemison, the first woman of color in space. Then there’s Margaret Hamilton, who led the team that developed the software for NASA’s Apollo missions and Nancy Grace Roman, who helped bring the vision of the Hubble Space Telescope to life. Each of them is an American hero and it is good to know that kids can now play with some toys based on them. Girls will especially love it and who knows, it might even get them involved in the sciences. One day your daughter might even run NASA after playing with this set. Fans of our space program are going to love this set.

It is a great way to honor the contributions of these women to the US space program. LEGO did a great job on this one. They will look great displayed.

Lego launches new range dedicated to Women of NASA

Lego is launching a set of mini-figures to celebrate the Women of NASA.

The new range will feature four pioneering women of the American space agency.

Players can build the Hubble Space Telescope and, with the ‘Mother of Hubble’ Nancy Grace Roman, design software for space missions with computer scientist Margaret Hamilton. They will also be able to fire off the space shuttle with Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space in 1983, and Mae Jemison, the world’s first woman of colour in space in 1992.

Fans of the movie Hidden Figures may notice that Nasa mathematician Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P Henson) – the space scientist who calculated and verified trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo programmes – is missing. This is because Lego was unable to get approval from “key people” to turn Johnson into a mini figure, too.

Spencer group denies being ‘hateful’ as UF braces

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) Supporters of Richard Spencer, the firebrand white nationalist whose upcoming appearance at the University of Florida sparked a state of emergency, say he’s not a racist.

And, they insist, he’s not to blame for violent clashes like the one at a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., that left one woman dead and dozens more injured.

But the Anti-Defamation League brands Spencer as a white supremacist whose buttoned-down appearance and articulate speech belies a hateful, anti-Semitic ideology.

Attorney General Pam Bondi this week painted Spencer, the head of the National Policy Institute, as a dangerous provocateur who has incited violence across the nation.

“This guy is out there espousing violence and hatred and anger,” Bondi told reporters Tuesday.

Gov. Rick Scott, who declared a state of emergency in Alachua County this week, has also urged people to avoid the event Thursday.

Bondi’s and Scott’s take on Spencer and his followers is “complete nonsense,” Evan McLaren, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based National Policy Institute, told The News Service of Florida in a telephone interview.

“And they know it’s nonsense, because they have no substantial or serious response to our message and to our presence and so they’re trying to deal with it by portraying us as violent and hateful,” McLaren said. “There’s nothing hateful about what Richard or myself or National Policy Institute expresses.”

Spencer calls himself an “identitarian” who wants “to preserve the white majority” in the country.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and University of Florida President Kent Fuchs also urged people to boycott Spencer’s speech as Gainesville braces for the kinds of skirmishes between Spencer’s supporters and opponents, including “Antifa,” or anti-fascists, that have erupted on campuses elsewhere.

The university initially balked at allowing Spencer to speak, but relented after his attorney threatened to sue.

“I think Gov. Scott and the attorney general would be well-advised to see that the First Amendment is protected and upheld instead of injecting themselves into a political dialogue that they are obviously not able to handle like responsible adults,” McLaren said.

McLaren blamed Antifa, many of whom wear black helmets and carry pepper spray, for the melees at Spencer’s other appearances.

“When we hold events by ourselves that we control, there is no violence,” McLaren said. “The only time that there is violence is when the left shows up to counter-demonstrate and attack us, or even when elements of the left show up on their own.”

At the Charlottesville rally in August, Spencer supporters carried tiki torches and chanted “Jews will not replace us” before a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring dozens of others.

But counter-protesters and Spencer supporters may not be the only ones in danger.

McLaren went to work for Spencer shortly after passing the Bar exam in late July.

“My first business purchase was a ballistics vest. So we’re definitely mindful of the threat that we face. But this is just how the game is played. If you want to say something serious and meaningful and change-oriented, then obviously it’s going to upset a lot of people,” McLaren said.

Antifa members from Atlanta and Orlando are expected to flood into Gainesville, even though they may not have access to the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, where Spencer will speak.

Organizers of the event decided to distribute tickets to the speech, instead of the typical process in which the center provides the tickets, after reports that ticket-holders could exchange the passes for free beer or even money.

McLaren said he will hand out tickets inside the venue to people who make it through a primary security check, and he won’t give them to anybody who looks like they are there to create a disturbance.

The selective ticket situation could heighten tensions already ramping up at the university.

“It made us all upset because it’s happening on our campus and we can’t even attend the event,” said Christopher Wilde, a 21-year-old senior from Miramar who is a member of the “No Nazis at UF” group opposing Spencer’s speech and the university administration’s handling of it.

In Gainesville, barricades are already erected, streets will be shut down and Florida Highway Patrol officers are on the ground, creating a forbidding aura.

Many students are torn between boycotting the speech, as advised by Fuchs and others, protesting or attending. Despite the state of emergency issued by Scott, Fuchs has not canceled classes Thursday.

Dozens of members of the “No Nazis at UF” group marched to the school’s administrative offices Monday to protest Spencer’s appearance, pledging to show up en masse on Thursday. The group, which collected more than 3,500 online petitions urging the university to cancel the speech, participated in a sit-in on campus Tuesday evening to protest the university’s refusal to cancel classes.

“They’re pretending you can go to campus safely if you stay away from the Phillips Center, but they’re shutting down buildings that are far away,” Wilde said in a telephone interview. “It’s a mixed message. School isn’t closed but we’re going to have cops and National Guard all over campus and buildings are shut down. If it’s safe out there, why is there such a heavy police presence and why are buildings being closed early?”

Wilde is ignoring advice from his parents, who told him to treat the rest of the week like a hurricane and stay shuttered in his apartment, even though he said he is afraid of what might happen Thursday.

“I’m worried for everyone’s safety but I also know that we have to show our opposition to this kind of ideology because in history the only thing that has stopped it is opposition to Nazism or white supremacy,” he said. “It’s scary but it’s the only way.

Meanwhile, a group of students has organized an online event scheduled to take place at the same time as Spencer’s 2:30 p.m. speech.

“If people want to protest, they’re going to protest. But there’s also people on campus who feel very unsafe and would rather stay inside so this gives them an outlet to engage with the university community and not be alone on that day,” said Cassie Bell, a 22-year-old senior from Margate who is one of the organizers of “TogetherUF.”

The Facebook event, which Bell called an “online assembly” and will be accompanied by live social media posts, gives students “an opportunity to stay safe and be inside if that’s what they prefer to do.”

The speech coincides with exams for most students, adding to anxiety, said Bell, who hasn’t decided what she will do on Thursday.

But participating in the TogetherUF group has given students like Bell an outlet to protest Spencer’s platform, even if only from afar.

“I obviously don’t agree (with him). I have yet to meet somebody that does. But I almost feel that they’re so radical I’m not sure what I can do as an individual to combat their beliefs,” she said in a telephone interview. “It’s given me a sense that I’m not just sitting on my hands, that we’re actively making an effort.”

An uneasy Florida braces for white supremacist speech and protests

The University of Florida in Gainesville is bracing for a day of protests Thursday when white supremacist Richard Spencer arrives to deliver a speech on his racist views on campus.

The event, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, will be Spencer's first visit to a college campus since he and others participated in the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August.

University and local officials are wary that Thursday's event could also become violent, and they have taken a number of steps to prevent that.

On Wednesday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Alachua County, where the university is located, to enable law enforcement agencies to work together more efficiently. He also made a provision for the National Guard to be activated if necessary.

"I find that the threat of a potential emergency is imminent," Scott said in the executive orderdeclaring the state of emergency.

The event puts the university in the middle of an ongoing debate about what constitutes protected speech and the extent of its limits. University of Florida President W. Kent Fuchs denounced Spencer's white supremacist platform as abhorrent in a letter to students but said the school could not stop him from renting the Phillips Center for the event.

Catalonia: Spain ultimatum over independence push passes

A final deadline for Catalonia to drop a secession bid has passed, with Spain warning it will suspend the region's autonomy.

Catalonia's leader Carles Puigdemont was given until 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT) to clarify his position.

After a referendum on 1 October, he signed an independence declaration but then suspended it, asking for dialogue.

Reports suggest he will press ahead on independence if Madrid moves to take direct control.

There are fears that this may lead to civil unrest in Catalonia.

Article 155 of Spain's 1978 constitution, which cemented democratic rule after the death of dictator General Franco three years earlier, allows Madrid to impose direct rule in a crisis but it has never been invoked.

MEDINA, Tenn. — Jeremy Brown and his wife, Sheila, don't always agree on how many Christmas lights they should put up outside.
"One of us likes to have lights and the other doesn't like to put them up," Brown, who lives in Medina, said on Tuesday.
Usually the couple just hangs a modest string of lights around their front door. But this year, Brown, who is the lead pastor at Journey Church, decided to bring a little of his personality into their decorations.
After their neighbor completely lined the roof and fence with lights, covered all of the trees and added some lit-up animals, Brown did something a little less subtle.
He went into his garage, started hacking away at some plywood, got some white lights and made a lit sign that says "DITTO" with an arrow pointing to his neighbor's brightly lit home.
"When your neighbors put up decorations like that, you can either be jealous, or you can be humorous; it's up to you," he said. "So I just figured when you can combine Christmas decorations and sarcasm, it's right up my alley."
Brown said his neighbor, who decorates every year, thought it was hilarious.
Once word spread around town about Brown's decorations, or lack thereof, people started to visit the small cul-de-sac regularly.
"It's been pretty funny sitting and eating dinner or whatever and watching just a consistent string of people making a circle to take apicture of your sarcasm," he said.
Even in Jackson, Brown's home is known.
"This morning I was in Starbucks and I was talking to a guy I always see in there and he said, 'Hey, man, I saw a picture of your decorations on Facebook,' and he said, 'That's hilarious,' and another guy, total stranger, goes, 'You're not the guy that did the ditto thing, are you?' so I got a kick out of that," Brown said.

Bitter cold, no power for many after ice storms (USA News)

Hundreds of thousands of people from Michigan to Maine remained without power on a bitter cold Monday after an ice storm blasted its way across the country dumping two inches of ice in some places.
Almost 300,000 power customers in Michigan alone remained without power Monday. Consumers Energy spokesman Dan Bishop said some customers could be without power on Christmas Day or longer. The current outages are down from nearly 400,000 customers who were without power after the storms hit, according to the utility companies.
Monday's forecast for a high temperature below freezing; Tuesday's high was forecast at 21 degrees.
"It's going to be a challenging week," said Bishop, who added that crews were coming in from several states to aid in power restoration. "We'll be making progress over the next couple of days, but the hardest hit areas, it'll be the end of the week.
"We encourage people to find shelter, get with a family member that has heat and electricity. We'll be working with the Red Cross and Salvation Army to make sure people have what they need."
In Burlington, Vt., temperatures are expected to rise to 35 or 36 Monday but the "heat wave" will be short-lived, National Weather Service meteorologist Peter Banacos said.
"It looks like 16 (degrees) for Christmas," he said. "The 2 or 3 inches of ice are not going away. There is not enough time."
In addition to ice in the north, the storm system brought hammering wind and rain to the South, leaving at least nine people dead. But holiday travelers may still face slick roads as the system douses the Southeast with heavy rainfall, said Frank Strait, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
The weather should calm by Christmas Eve, though the Midwest and East Coast likely will see freezing temperatures colder than normal.
A "cold arctic air mass is going to settle in behind the front,'' Strait said. "Across parts of the Midwest, a lot of people will be in single digits and teens for highs. That's well colder than normal.''
The weekend storm was a study in extremes. Its northern edge featured sleet and freezing rain that sparked travel advisories in New York and New England. Several inches of snow fell from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. On the other hand, many eastern cities saw record high temperatures.
The storm was also deadly. Five people were killed in flooding in Kentucky, and a woman died after a tornado with winds of 130 mph struck Saturday in Arkansas. Ice and snow in Oklahoma were blamed for three traffic deaths on slick roads.
In Mississippi, one man died after his mobile home overturned in the and another died when his car hit a tree that had fallen across a county road.

Joseph A. Bank rejects Men's Warehouse bid (USA News)

Clothing firm Joseph A. Bank has rejected a $1.54 billion acquisition bid by rival Men's Warehouse, marking a new chapter in the Wall Street suit wars.
The Hampstead, Md.-based firm announced Monday that its board of directors had unanimously turned down the Nov. 26 takeover bid after concluding that the offer "significantly undervalued the company."
Men's Wearhouse had offered to acquire Joseph A. Bank for $55 per share in cash, a bid that represented an implied value of roughly $1.2 billion for the takeover target. Men's Wearhouse said at the time its bid was 32% over the closing share price of Joseph A. Bank on Oct. 8 — the day before the firm proposed its own takeover of Men's Wearhouse.
"Our board undertook a thorough review and determined that the per share consideration in the proposal made to us by Men's Warehouse was simply not in the best interest of our shareholders," Robert Wildrick, chairman of Joseph A. Bank, said in a statement announcing the decision. He added that the firm is continuing "to review acquisition opportunities that would represent a strategic fit with our company."
Joseph A. Bank shares were down 66 cemts at $56.37 shortly after U.S. financial markets opened Monday. Similarly, Men's Wearhouse shares were down 59 cents at $51.42.

2nd opinion for girl brain dead after routine tonsillectomy (USA News)

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The family of a Northern California girl on life support after being declared brain dead was expected to appear with hospital officials in court Monday to announce the name of the independent physician it has chosen to provide a second opinion on the girl's condition.
Jahi McMath's family obtained an order Friday from Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo to keep doctors at Children's Hospital Oakland from removing Jahi from a ventilator.
Grillo ordered the family to meet with doctors to select a neurologist to evaluate the 13-year-old.
In its court memorandum, the hospital said it has no duty to maintain life support because Jahi's condition is irreversible.
"Ms. McMath is dead," the hospital said in the memo. "Children's is under no legal obligation to provide medical or other intervention for a deceased person."
The family says the girl bled profusely after a routine tonsillectomy. She then went into cardiac arrest before being declared brain dead Dec. 12.
The teen's mother, Nailah Winkfield, over the weekend pleaded for prayers for her daughter.
"Despite what they say, she is alive. I can touch her, she is warm. She responds to my touch," Winkfield said in an open letter Saturday. "Given time I know (God) will spark her brain awake."

Children's Hospital responded in a statement that while it sympathizes with Winkfield's wishes, it would be unfair to give false hope.
Winkfield said her daughter bled profusely and went into cardiac arrest after undergoing a "simple procedure" to remove her tonsil to help with her sleep apnea.
The hospital's statement contends the surgery was complicated, and that the facility is committed to fully investigating what caused "this catastrophic outcome."
The family's attorney, Christopher Dolan, told Grillo the family wanted independent tests because it does not believe the hospital's physicians are sufficiently independent.
The hospital said in documents presented to the court Friday that a staff neurologist and Jahi's attending physician conducted separated exams, both of which determined that Jahi's entire brain, including her brain stem, stopped functioning.

Monday marks key health care deadline (USA News)

WASHINGTON — Monday marks the last day to sign up through the federal and state health exchanges to have insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1. And while government officials said the federal site, HealthCare.gov, can handle a last-minute rush of consumers, there's still fear that the word may not be getting out to the people who most need to enroll.
"It's certainly important to people who are used to having some health care coverage because they want to make sure there's no gap in coverage," said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, a non-profit health care advocacy group. The biggest concern, he said, is people who "had coverage, but it may have been inadequate or unaffordable, or they may have been in high risk pools — for those groups, getting enrolled by Dec. 23 is absolutely a priority."
People may enroll on the marketplaces until March 31 to gain insurance and avoid having to pay a fee for not having health insurance, as is now required by the law. But Pollack said it is particularly important for some groups of people to sign up now to have coverage in January:
• Those whose pre-existing condition insurance plans will end Dec. 31.
• Those who lost coverage when insurers canceled 2013 plans that did not meet the required standards of the Affordable Care Act.
• People in states where Medicaid is scaling back.
"There's been a special outreach to the people in the high-risk pools and who received termination notices," Pollack said. "For those who have not had coverage in the past, but haven't needed coverage, they may not feel quite the same sense of urgency."
Julie Bataille, director of the office of communications for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said the government expects to be able to handle the volume created by the deadline. Healthcare.gov can now handle at least 800,000 people a day, and if the system begins to run slowly, Bataille said a queuing system will allow people to leave their e-mail addresses. When the site becomes available, they get an e-mail that lets them be placed at the front of the line when they return.
The government has also added 800 new people to the call centers, so more than 12,000 people are available to answer questions. Workers also received training to address questions specific to the deadline. About 80,000 navigators and certified application agents have been trained across the country to answer questions one-on-one.
In some areas, the word is still taking a while to get out. Some insurers held back on advertising until the website was fixed, and some state governments have continued an anti-Affordable Care Act stance by not promoting the exchanges at all.
In Ohio, for example, the state's online health page offers no explanations of the law, only links to the federal exchange and the required regulatory information.
"They've taken a position that we don't have to do anything about this,'" said Kathleen Gmeiner, project director for Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage. "The insurance commissioner has made it very clear over the past two years that she opposes the ACA and she opposes the marketplace."
But proponents of the law say slow advertising efforts, following the flawed Oct. 1 launch of HealthCare.gov, have also contributed to consumers not knowing their options. President Obama announced Friday that more than a million people had signed up for both the state and federal exchanges, most of them in December. When Healthcare.gov launched, consumers faced frozen pages, lost applications and long wait times. Those issues have been fixed and the site is running properly, Bataille said.
In addition to technical problems, repeated efforts by Republicans to repeal the law may have confused consumers about the need to sign up.
"It's so amazing that so many people still think the law was either repealed or never got passed," Gmeiner said. "One senior said, 'You're talking as if this is really going to happen.' Well, it's happening. But we've got a big row to hoe when it comes to getting the word out."
In New Mexico, the state had not been aggressive in marketing the health care exchange because of the botched federal roll-out. But it is now stepping up its efforts.
"We've changed a lot of our marketing," said Debra Hammer, spokeswoman for the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange. "We held back on it because we knew there was some frustration with the federal website."
In one week in December, the state gained 1,000 new "likes" for a Facebook page, which has now received more than 7,000 "likes", and more than 29,000 people have viewed a video for the state's large Native-American community, she said.
"We know that insurance is really complicated," she said. "We're trying to use the social media to educate people. What's a pre-existing condition? What' s a deductible?"
Navigators, or those who can assist people through the process, are "booked out," she said, so the state is looking at hiring more, and conducting group enrollment sessions. Several states, cities and community organizations have started "enrollment fairs," where people can sign up in groups with guided help.
Robert Zirkelbach, spokesman for America's Health Insurance Plans, said insurers are working to educate people about their options, as well as to help them enroll.
"Our industry wants to make sure people don't experience gaps in their coverage due to issues outside their control," he said, citing the website problems and canceled plans.
But he said there has been some confusion: People will not gain coverage until they pay their first month's premium, which is done through the insurer, not through HealthCare.gov. Because of the confusion, people have until Jan. 10 to pay their premium, he said. So people who register by Monday and pay their premium by Jan. 10 will have coverage retroactive to Jan. 1.

NYPD: Man, toddler dead in plummet from building (USA News)

NEW YORK (AP) — A man and his 3-year-old son plummeted to their deaths from a Manhattan apartment building, police said Sunday as they investigated what led to the tragedy.
Authorities said they received an emergency call reporting two jumpers from the 52-floor building on the Upper West Side around noon. Officers responding to the scene found the 35-year-old man and the boy on the rooftops of two separate nearby buildings.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the child was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, police said. No identifications were released.
The circumstances of the fall are unclear. Authorities said the father did not appear to live in the building.
Luis Ortiz told the New York Post that he was at the hospital when paramedics rushed the boy there and that they were pumping his chest and working on him.
"You could tell he was slipping away. They said the father was up there, but they didn't bring anyone else in. It was just heartbreaking. I have two kids of my own. They tried to do the best they could," Ortiz told the newspaper.
Police investigating the deaths left the building in the mid-afternoon to photograph a gray Lexus RX350 parked nearby.
The building, listed as South Park Tower, is a short distance away from Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center.
In March, a woman clutching her baby son in her arms plunged eight stories out of a Harlem apartment window to her death, but the 10-month-old survived. Authorities found a suicide note in her home.

Pussy Riot freed, slam Russian amnesty as 'PR move' (USA News)

Two members of the brash Russian punk bank Pussy Riot were released from prison Monday under a new amnesty law, but remained defiant, charging the Kremlin with mounting a public relations stunt to repair its human rights image in advance of the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February.
Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were serving a two-year sentence for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred for staging a raucous, profanity-laced performance at Moscow's main cathedral in March 2012.
A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was released earlier on a suspended sentence.
The band members said their 2012 protest, which was videotaped and posted on YouTube, was aimed at raising concern about increasingly close ties between the state and the church.
Alekhina, 25, was freed in Nizhny Novgorod and Tolokonnikova, 24, was released from a prison hospital in Krasnoyarsk in Siberia. Both were scheduled for release in March, but qualified under the new amnesty bill because they have small children.
The law, passed by the Russian parliament last week, opens the way for the release of thousands of inmates. Charges against 30 people arrested while taking part in a Greenpeace protest at a Russian Arctic offshore oil rig may also be dropped later this week under the law, the BBC reports.
On Friday, President Vladimir Putin pardoned Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a former oil tycoon and once Russia's richest man, who spent a decade in prison on fraud and tax evasion charges after challenging Putin's power.
Khodorkovsky flew to Germany after release and said he will stay out of politics. He pledged, however, to fight for the release of political prisoners in Russia.
Flashing a "V" sign, Tolokonnikova smiled to reporters as she walked out of the prison.
"How do you like our Siberian weather here?" she said, referring to the -13 Fahrenheit temperature.
Tolokonnikova, who said she and Alekhina will set up a human rights group to help prisoners, told reporters that the way prisons are run reflect the way the country is governed.
"I saw this small totalitarian machine from the inside," she said. "Russia functions the same way the prison colony does," she said.
Tolokonnikova's husband told the BBC that the pair were even more determined to keep up their opposition activities.
"The only thing they have acquired over their two years in prison is their confidence to continue fighting Putin's regime even harder, because, well, this is the only thing that can change things in our country," he said.
Pressure has been building on Russia internationally over its human rights record, including the passage of a law earlier this year banning so-called homosexual propaganda among minors.
Alekhina told Dozhd TV that she would have served out her term if she had been able to reject amnesty.
"If I had a chance to turn it down, I would have done it, no doubt about that," she said. "This is not an amnesty. This is a hoax and a PR move."
Alekhina said that prison officials did not give her a chance to say goodbye to cell mates, but put her in a car and drove her to the train station in downtown Nizhny Novgorod. Before seeing her family and friends, she met with local rights activists and said she will work on defending human rights.
Russia's Supreme Court earlier this month ordered a review of the Pussy Riot case, saying that a lower court did not fully prove their guilt and did not take their family circumstances into consideration when reaching the verdict.
Also on Monday, the European Court of Human Rights said it will review a complaint filed by band members over their treatment while on trial in Moscow in 2012.
